East Coast and Gulf Coast Ports – Potential Strikes

PRO*ACT is actively monitoring the contract negotiations between the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the United States Maritime Alliance. The current contract ended on September 30th, 2024, and both sides are negotiating to avoid port shutdowns.

Expectations:

  • The ILA represents over 85,000 workers and 30+ ports along the Eastern seashore to the Gulf Coast.
  • Potential items impacted – Bananas, Pineapples, offshore citrus, clothes, automotive parts
  • West Coast ports will have increased demand.
  • The strike seems imminent and will go into effect on Tuesday 10/1/2024.
  • Over the weekend, some suppliers moved shipments to ports not impacted by the strike
  • Market pricing and availability to be limited until strike the resolved
  • For each day there is a strike, the ports will be backlogged by 4-6 days.
